Community Care for Elderly

Many communities have amenities and facilities for senior citizen. Because elderly people tend to be isolated, they develop depression and other mental disorders. Therefore, socialization is impetrative for their mental health.

Community centers for senior citizens give them a place to go during the day. They go to the centers to play cards, board games, or just to socialize. For many of these elderly people, this community center is the only place they have to be with other older people. The center provides people who do not go to church and have no church family a safe place to go for fun and fellowship.

These senior citizen facilities offer a hot lunch for a minimal fee or sometimes free. These meals are sometimes the only hot meals the seniors have during the day. The meals are not fancy but nutritious. Also, particularly for seniors who live alone, communal dining makes them eat more. Some of these seniors hate to eat alone and, therefore, eat very little when they are by themselves. These centers are life savers for the seniors who come regularly.

The senior citizen facilities provide entertainment for the elderly. There is generally a paid coordinator who is in charge of entertainment. Most cities have many schools that are more than willing to entertain the guests. Talented kids are always ready to entertain. Some high schoolers perform plays and lead sing-a-long sessions. Seniors are like everyone else; they love to sing, laugh, and just have fun. Again this fun and entertainment are vital for the mental health of these older people.

Some senior community centers even plan dances for their elderly. They hire a band or a DJ and decorate the center. The music is the type these seniors dance to when they were young. It’s kind of like a junior senior prom that high school kids attend. The dress is formal so everyone gets to dress up. Another fun event is the crowning of the King and Queen of the Prom. Everyone votes for the King and Queen and then the crowning takes place later. The seniors have such a great time even if the women outnumber the men. The men who come to the proms are very popular because the ladies make such a fuss over them.

Senior community centers also plan trips for the seniors who are able to travel. These outings range from day trips to longer ones. Center who has lots of seniors who are able to travel and have higher incomes plan cruises or bus trips to favorite vacation spots.

Communities who want to take care of their precious seniors create and fund centers for them to have fun and socialize. Seniors who attend these centers stay younger longer and healthier. They are a blessing to everyone.
