Elderly Hair Care

No matter what the age, from very young to quite old, a woman’s hair is her crowning glory. Hair makes women feel feminine and more beautiful no matter what the age. Yes, even senior citizen’s need their hair needs taken car of by professionals.

Many people are so focused on health care for the elderly that they totally ignore elderly hair care needs. Many times elderly patients lie in hospitals for weeks even months without even having their hair washed because the patient is bedridden. Because there are so many elderly hair care products that will wash hair without water, there is no reason why an aid or family member can’t wash the patient’s hair every once and a while.

When my mother-in-law was dying, she worried about her hair. It has been a long time since she had had her hair washed. My husband and I had no idea what to do at the time to assist her with her hair. She had been a hair dresser when she was younger so her hair was very important to her. She also needed to be bathed and changed.

We had no training and no idea whatsoever what to do. Finally, the home health care aid came to visit. She was incredible. This older lady has been taking care of senior citizens her whole life. What a blessing she way. She gave mother-in-law a bath and washed and styled her hair. My mother-in-law was very weak but loved feeling clean and neat with her hair pretty. She died a few days later. I had no idea that something as simple as pretty hair could make her last days so much better.

Many home health care facilities provide hair care for their elderly residents. A local hair dresser comes one day each week to cut, wash, or style the residents’ hair. Again something as elementary as a new hair style can make the senior citizens feel so much better about themselves.

Because elderly people sometimes have very dry or thin hair, special products are necessary. There are even professional lines of hair products that are made just for senior citizens.

Remembering that elderly hair care is essential to their feelings of self-worth and overall happiness reminds us all that simply take of a senior’s health needs is not enough. Almost as important is caring for their hair needs as well.
