Elderly Residential Home Care
![]() |
Many people who become unable to take care of themselves simply refuse to move in with their children or move into a retirement home. They know that they cannot live alone any longer but cannot cope with the idea of moving from their home. In this case if money is not a problem, the adult children can hire a residential home care provider.
Finding the right home care provider is a difficult proposition because the care of your parent is of paramount importance. There are many companies that provide caregivers for this purpose. You will give them a list of your needs and they will attempt to provide you with a list of people who will fill your needs.
The next step is the interview process. Before you actually meet the people you are going to interview, make a list of questions you want to ask. Talk with your parent and make sure that he/she feels a part of the process. Remember this caregiver is going to be a part of your parent’s life from now on. Residential home care providers become roommates who also take care of your parent’s normal, everyday needs and health care needs.
During the interview process, you will try to develop a relationship with the caregivers. Try to see them taking care of your parent. Try to envision this caregiver at your family gatherings. Try to get a feel for this person’s integrity and personality. You should ask your questions while at the same time trying to learn about the caregiver.
After you have narrowed down the candidates to about two or three, you will want them to meet your parent. Allow them a little time alone to see how they click. After a time join the meeting and join the conversations. Watch how the caregiver relates to your parent. Also watch how your parent reacts to each candidate.
After the interview process is over, you will probably have made up your mind, but wait make sure that your parent’s viewpoint is also considered. If you and your parent are in agreement, there are no problems. If there is a disagreement, try to come to a consensus. If agreement is not possible, let your parent decide who is best unless you think the candidate will compromise your parents help.
If you are still in doubt, call the references provided. Ask the people who gave references a few questions about the candidates. After these questions, you will have to make a decision. Know that there will be a period of adjustment after the caregiver moves in. Sometimes you will feel like a referee and sometimes you will feel like the parent. Hopefully, this residential home care professional will be perfect for your parent’s needs.
The process of hiring a home health care professional is a difficult process. Taking your time and making the right decisions will make the decisions much less arduous.
