Health Care Issue for the Elderly

One major health care issue for the elderly is the price of prescription drugs. As the years go by, the price of prescription drugs gets higher and higher. Because elderly people tend to take more drugs than younger people, the high price of drugs rests highly on their shoulders.

Because most elderly people are retired and, therefore, on a fixed income, they have only a small amount of money each month to depend on for rent, food, car, prescriptions, and utilities. Many depend on Federal Assistance for help. The elderly people who do not qualify for Medicaid have to pay for their prescription drugs out of their own pocket.

Many elderly people who don’t qualify for Medicaid and cannot afford any type of prescription health care simply don’t have the money to pay for their medicine. Many older people split their pills so they will last longer. This is a problem because splitting a pill does not give the older person the amount of medicine prescribed. This can cause terrible health consequences. But what can they do? They don’t have enough money to buy groceries or pay the rent if they buy all of their medications.

Other elderly people only take their medicines every other day to save money. This also causes health problems. If they have to decide between medications and eating or having electricity, they have to make choices. Many of these choices can cause drastic health problems.

Some elderly people simply don’t take their medicines at all. If they have generic medicines, they can afford that small price, but if a medicine is new and expensive, they won’t bother to fill the prescription.

Many elderly people try to medicate themselves with over-the-counter medicines because they are cheaper. Unfortunately, some of these medications can interact badly with the medications the older person is taking

A major health problem of the elderly is the high price of prescription drugs. When they are on a fixed income, there isn’t enough money left after the bills are paid to pay for the drugs.
