Nursing Care for the Elderly

It’s the time everyone dreads. It’s the time no one wants to think about much less talk about. It’s the time when we have to make the health care decisions for our parents. It’s a time of role reversals. It’s the time when we the adult children have to become the parents and make decisions for our parents about their health care. No one is ever prepared to take the reigns of control from our parents, but may come a time when this is a necessity.

When our parents become unable to take care of themselves, we are faced with providing nursing care for them. If possible, we can make the decision to bring our parent or parents to live with us. This decision is huge and affects the entire family. If you decide to bring your parents home, be ready for many changes. Possibly, your parents do not want to leave their homes and come to live with you. Their resistance will cause problems but with time this should pass.

When you bring your parents home, the best situation is to give them their own space. A small living room and bedroom with bath make for the best environment. If this is not possible, make sure that they know that your home is their home. If possible, use their furniture to decorate their space to make them feel at home. If this is not possible, at least let them bring accessories that will spell home.

If the doctor has said that the elderly parent cannot be left alone, someone will have to be at home at all times. If you have a two income household, you will have to hire a caregiver. This is not an easy job. One way to find a qualified caregiver is to visit a reputable agency. The agency will send over caregivers for you to interview.

During the interview process, you may be a little nervous so beforehand make a list of your questions. Another good idea is to take notes during the interview so that you will have notes to look at after you have finished. If you make a decision at this time, introduce your caregiver to your parent before you hire her. Make sure they are a good fit. You can tell a lot by the way the caregiver interacts with your parent.

Once you have hired a caregiver, try to take a few days off so that the transition will be made easier. Particularly if your parent is resistant, you can make the situation much easier. After a few days when you have returned to work, you may want to call a few times during the day just to see how everything is going. You might even make a few unannounced visits during the first few weeks just to keep tabs on the situation.

Taking in a parent is a very loving and difficult decision. Finding the right caregiver is essential if you will not be at home at all times. Also, the caregiver will give you time to yourself and help make this difficult easier.
