Taking Care of Elderly Parent

Taking care of an elderly parent can be some of the most rewarding time in a person’s life. You can repay your parents for the way they cared for you as you grew up. You needed them in a way that cannot be described and now they need you.

Helping a parent who is older and becoming infirm runs a fine line. You don’t want to treat your parent like a child and you don’t want the parent to be in danger. Finding a good balance is very difficult. Seeking professional advice is very advantageous at times when striking just the right tone seems unreachable.

Sometimes elderly parents are happy when their adult children start to take charge. They are flattered by the extra attention and glad for the help. They enjoy the convenience of having family drive them to doctor’s appointments or being taken to the market for groceries. Many adult children have no problems with their parents when they take on more and more responsibility.

Problems arise when the elderly parents resist the help even when it is for their own good. When parents become too old or too infirm to drive, many problems arise. Have you seen Driving Miss Daisy? If you have, you know that sometimes elderly people refuse to allow their adult children to help them. Many traffic accidents are caused by elderly people driving when they no longer should. Giving up the right to drive is a very difficult decision especially for men.

No one wants to be treated like a child, especially when they have been in control of their own destiny for their entire lives. Giving up control is incredibly horrific for elderly people. They fear being forced to give up their homes, their friends, and being sent to a nursing home to die. Even if the adult children have never indicated the possibility of a nursing home, this is the worst fear of most elderly people.

Financial concerns also cause problems. When an elderly parent can no longer take care of finances, the adult child has to take over. Elderly people are most often the victims of scams and theft. These elderly people are very trusting and are easy targets of criminals. The best solution to this problem is to have two signatures necessary for writing checks. That way the wary parent doesn’t have to fear that the adult children will take all the money.

Taking care of an elderly parent is one of the most rewarding responsibilities for adult children. Sometimes there are problems, but with work and love, the problems can be worked out.
