Taking Care of the Elderly

Most baby boomers today have or will have had the experience of taking care of their parents. One of the saddest events in life is when the role of mother and son reverses. The son has to learn to take care of his mother. I remember so well when my mother-in-law was so ill and near death. My husband cared for his mother the same way she cared for him when he was a baby. This reversal in life is traumatic for both parties.

When a parent can no longer take care of himself/herself, the children step up and become the parents. They have to make the health care decisions for the parent, talk to docotors, and make arrangements for the parent to live.

When a parents are vey ill and near death, the adult children have to talk to the doctors and make life and death decisions for their parents. This is such a difficult time because no one is prepared for the stress involved in taking care of parent.

Sometimes parents and their adult children clash as it what is the best care. Many parents who cannot live alone don’t want to go to a nursing home. If the adult children work and cannot adequatly care for the parents, then the parents must go into a nursing home or retirement home. Even though the parents know they can’t take care of themeslves, they fight going into the home. This causes so much heartache for all parties.

If the parents simply cannot live alone, the nursing home is the only choice. If the adult child has to take parents to a nursing home against their will, no can ever know the horrible stress involved. The adult child is doing the best he can, but he feels like a horrible person because he is leaving his beloved parent in a nursing home against his will. This is a terrrible situation and one no one would ever choose.

Many elderly people can live at home with some help. If money premts, someone coming into the house each day can make the difference between a nursing home and living at home.

Taking care of the elderly has become a very emotional issue as more and more elderly people become too ill to take care of themselves. Before this happens, parents and their adult children should talk about options before the occasion arises.
